Look at the following set of sentences-
Set-1:
Jerry is the tallest boy in the class.
Jerry is taller than any other boy in the class.
No other boy in the class is as tall as Jerry.
Set-2:
Jerry is one of the tallest boys in the class.
Jerry is taller than most other boys in the class.
Very few boys in the class are as tall as Jerry.
Set-3:
Jerry is taller than me.
I am not as tall as Jerry.
Explanation:
In every set, the first sentence is superlative, second is comparative and the last is positive.
In set one,Jerry is the tallest in the class. There is no one else who is of the same height or of more height.
In set two, Jerry is one of the tallest. There is some boys who are of same height or more.
In set three, Jerry is of more height than me,so I am not. There isn’t any superlative sentence,as we need more than two.
Let’s take a look at them again, with some notes.
Set-1:
Jerry is the tallest boy in the class.(superlative)
Jerry is taller than any other boy in the class.(comparative)
No other boy in the class is as tall as Jerry.(positive)
Set-2:
Jerry is one of the tallest boys in the class.
Jerry is taller than most other boys in the class.
Very few boys in the class are as tall as Jerry.
Set-3:
Jerry is taller than me.
I am not as tall as Jerry.
Now let us use these base sentences to tackle some problems.
Australia is the largest island in the world.
Write the sentence Jerry is the tallest boy in the class like this:
Jerry Australia is the tallest largest boy island in the class world.
And now to make it to comparative,in the sentence
Jerry is taller than any other boy in the class
replace accordingly
Jerry Australia is taller larger than any other boy island in the class world.
So we get: Australia is larger than any other island in the world.
The same rule applies for the other two set.
